District 5-a-side 2017

Posted on September 23rd, 2017 by Tony McAndrew

Well done to the 4 Scouts from 17th Tynemouth who came to Parks Leisure Centre today, to take part in the annual Tynemouth District 5-a-side tournament.

Everyone tried their best throughout the games that were played. Unfortunately we did not win the team trophy this year, but a massive congratulations to 4th Tynemouth who were overall winners, and to the 1st Tynemouth who were announced as runners up.

We did take some silverware this year, with one of our Scouts receiving a trophy for player of the tournament! BRAVO!

A few photos are in the gallery below.

Hockey Victory for our Beavers

Posted on May 1st, 2017 by Tony McAndrew

This weekend, 3 of our Beavers took part in the District Hockey Competition. The Beavers accepted the challenge, participating in several activities including:

  • Hockey (of course)
  • Crab football
  • Dodgeball
  • Arts and crafts

Many biscuits were eaten and plenty of juice was consumed to keep the team full of energy for the action. Everyone tried their hardest and the 17th were victorious, winning a fantastic trophy for the first place team. Congratulations to you all, and well done to the 8th Tynemouth who were runners up in the competition.

Thank you to the leaders for organising the competition for us. We are already looking forward to next year for a re-match!

Scouts in the Community

Posted on April 1st, 2017 by Tony McAndrew

Earlier today, 17th Tynemouth Scouts took part in our first Scouts in the Community project. 12 Scouts, 5 Cubs and 1 Beaver from the 17th took time out of their busy weekends to help out at the Church of Our Lady & St. Columba in Wallsend. All of the team jumped into action to assist, and carried out a range of work including:

  • Reorganising storage inside the church
  • Clearing garden waste
  • Weeding the garden
  • Sweeping the paths
  • Polishing brass-work
  • Dusting the church
  • Cleaning the windows

The Cubs spent 2 hours and the Scouts 4 hours working around the church and the gardens. We hope visitors to the church notice a difference!

Huge thanks to all of the members who turned up today to lend a hand.

More photos of our work can be seen in The Gallery

Braving the cold – Wintercamp 2017

Posted on January 21st, 2017 by Tony McAndrew

Over the weekend of January 6th – 8th 2017, 17th Tynemouth Scouts braved the weather and went camping at Hawkhirst, Kielder for the annual Wintercamp.

Our Scouts’ view of Wintercamp

Here’s what they had to say about the adventure:

We started by setting up the stuff in the tents then drinking hot chocolate. The next day we went on the bumper cars and the miami ride. We had an amazing time. We waited in a long line to get onto the zipwire but it was worth it. The food was nice. At night we had a campfire.

On the first night we put our bags in the tents and then went for a wander around the site. We returned to the camp and had a choice of soup, hot chocolate and donuts. The next day we explored around our site before breakfast. We did lots of different activities and in the evening played a wide game and then had a campfire. On the Sunday we had the chance to do even more great activities.

I thought that camp was really good. I loved the miami ride and the zip wire the most. Every morning the breakfast was really nice. I found some friends from another scout group and enjoyed the hot chocolate from the snack bar. I bought a wintercamp hoodie and it was absolutely massive! At night it wasn’t too cold. Overall camp was really good and I would go again!

As you can see from these accounts of the camp, our Scouts definitely had a great time.

Loads to do…

There was a wide range of activities available to try, and our group certainly made the most of it. Here’s a list of some of the things they got up to over the weekend:

  • 500m Zipwire through the forest
  • Freefall bag drop
  • Bushcraft/wild cooking
  • Miami, dodgems and a simulator ride
  • Archery
  • Tomahawk throwing
  • Cave bus (caving simulator)
  • 4-wheel drive off-road adventure
  • Tank driving
  • Crafts, including making our own leather woggles
  • Huge wide game with around 150 people
  • Quad biking
  • Mountain biking
  • Disco
  • Fire lighting
  • Abseiling

Find out more…

Photos from the weekend can be found on our Gallery.

Cubs Head To Powburn

Posted on November 7th, 2016 by Tony McAndrew

This weekend our Cubs headed to Powburn Scout Adventure Centre for a weekend of adventure and mystery. We joined forces with the 3rd Tynemouth (Ritson’s Own) for the weekend (thanks for the invite).

Mystery Time

The theme of the camp was problem solving and teamwork. The Cubs had to work together in teams to solve problems and in turn receive a clue that would help them work out the name of a criminal in a “Sheerluck Holmes” mystery. You can find the mystery and the clues here if you want to have a go yourself:

cubs-powburn-62Cubs took part in a wide variety of activities to earn clues to help work out whodunnit including:

  • Nuclear Meltdown
  • Circus Skills
  • Maltesers and Chopsticks
  • Rubiks Cube and other puzzles
  • Cup Stacking
  • Domino Rally
  • Marble Run
  • Compass Bearings

Just For Fun

cubs-powburn-30It wasn’t all learning and hard work. The Cubs also had time to let off steam in their free time, which meant getting outside to play on the rope swing, beat the obstacle course and build dens. We had a great campfire on the Saturday evening along with a firework display given it was also bonfire night.

Check out more photos from the weekend on our Gallery.

Travelling The Globe At JOTI

Posted on October 26th, 2016 by Tony McAndrew

The Scout section took part in Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) over the weekend of 14th to 16th October 2016. Every one of our Scouts took part in the event. 17th Tynemouth organised our JOTI event for the whole of Tynemouth District. Almost all of the groups in Tynemouth participated.

More than 100 people came along to the Tynemouth District HQ to see what was going on. Contact was made with Scouts from all over the world using a variety of methods:

Scouts were armed with a list of questions to ask, log sheets and their own personalities. Using these tools they managed to find out a great deal about Scouting globally.

Overall the Scouts spoke to a whopping 81 countries this year. This is the best we’ve ever managed for JOTI in Tynemouth. The map and list of the countries we spoke to are at the end of this post.

Next year’s JOTI will be 20th to 22nd October 2017. It seems that our Scouts want to take part again so we will see you there again next year!

To see more photos from the event, please visit the Gallery.

Finally, a massive thank you to all who took part in the event, both from Tynemouth and across the world. Huge thanks also to the parents and leaders that helped out over the weekend.
